Movies

Ok – I am a sucker for a romantic movie – I am an incurable romantic and adore love stories – both sad and funny (ie romantic comedies) as at the end of the day I believe in love and not just love BUT – LOVE – and in all its wonderfully maddening forms.

So here is my top 25 list of my favorite romantic scenes in movies:

1. Pride and Prejudice – striding across the hillside in the dawn – when Darcy walks up to Elizabeth at the break of dawn to profess his love once again. “I love…I love…I love you.” Who would not want a guy to stride across the meadow to you and declare his love to you?
2. Notting Hill – in their secret park on their bench reading with her head in his lap – very romantic and sweet…This is what daydreams are made of…
3. Sound of Music – Gazebo scene between the captain and Maria – who would not want their love to declare their love finally in a beautiful garden gazebo…  and the Gazebo “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” dance scene – who has not wanted to dance in a gazebo in the rain?
4. Princess Bride – the kiss and “as you wishhhhhhhhh” – the best quote of all time ;)
5. Moulin Rouge – Come what may – I love this song  – it just says it all!
6. Sense and Sensibility – when Elinor breaks down into tears crying over the news that Edward is not married – for all of those of us who have loved deeply, desperately, and profoundly but were confounded with our pride and seemingly unescapable situations -this sense of utter breaking…Can I ever relate to this with my darn silly pride!
7. Bridget Jones’s Diary – at the end when Darcy kisses Bridget in the snow – priceless – and how often times the love of our lives is NOT who we expect them to be and how they will drive you absolutely bonkers.
8. Jerry Maguire – “You complete me” and ” I love him! I love him for the man he wants to be. And I love him for the man he almost is. ” - enough said!
9. As Good As it Gets – “You make me want to be a better man.”
10. Love Actually – Several – Colon Firth learns a new language to declare his love, Hugh Grant at the school play, the incredibly sweet posters scene…and I love the whole airport theme…
11. Memoirs of a Geisha – The end – “Can’t you see that every step I have taken has been to bring myself closer to you?”  – what a wonderful way to sum up a lifelong love affair!
12. The Notebook – the whole movie – the ending though where he says it is the story of us…
13. Ever After – “Breathe. Just Breathe”
14. The Scarlet Pimpernal – He is so in love with her that he kisses her footsteps.
15. Four Weddings and a Funeral – the reciting of WH Auden at the funeral (I adore that poem) and the ending
16. One Fine Day – how they fall asleep together on the couch – if that is not a picture of two working adults I do not know what is!
17. The Lake House – the kiss at the ending – and okay I admit it – I cried my eyes out at this one…
18. You’ve Got Mail – “I wanted it to be you…”
19. Like Water for Chocolate – Pedro and Tita’s undying love for each other and the cooking!!!! One of my favorite movies…very sensual!
20. Somethings Gotta Give – “I don’t want my bearings. I’ve had my bearings my whole goddamn life. I feel something with you I never really knew existed. Do you know what that’s like, after a 20-year marriage to feel something for another person that is so…? That… Oh, Right. Right. Not your problem. God. Do you know that I’ve written this, but I never really got it? Do you know what this is?” and “Erica Barry: I DO like sex! Harry Sanborn: You certainly do.” and of course the ending
21. Just Like Heaven – on the roof at the ending – I actually read the book years before the movie and cried more reading the book – but the movie was a good attempt..
22. Miss Congeniality – love this scene – “You think I’m gorgeous, you want to kiss me… You want to hug me… You want to love me… You want to hug me… You want to smooch me… You want to…”
23. Never Been Kissed – the ending at the ballpark…can I get kissed liked that?
24. Becoming Jane – the ending – reading of the poem and the meeting after all these years and yes this is another one that I cried my eyes out about the unrequiented love.
25. Possession – reading of poetry in bed – hmmmmmmmm :)
